This guide presents legal resources for several countries in East Asia, China and Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.
None of the official versions of these countries' law is in English, but English translations are usually available and provide a good starting point for understanding.
In addition, the steps for conducting research in a foreign country's law involve the same principles used in U.S. legal research with one exception: consideration of the type of legal system. China and Taiwan, Japan, and Korea all have civil law systems for which legislation is primary authority and judicial opinions are secondarily important.
In general, to research foreign law, the usual legal research tactics apply. Start with secondary sources, identify the types of material you are looking for, whether legislation or a practical tool such as a checklist or form, and then locate a source for that material.
