Which European countries have opened their borders ahead of the summer holiday season?
Germany will open its borders to the EU and UK on June 15.  Currently, travelers are expected to have a valid reason for entering Germany. However, restrictions at the borders have been loosened. Checks at the frontier with Austria, Switzerland, France and Denmark and for passengers arriving by air from Italy and Spain remain in effect until 15 June. EU citizens and citizens of the United Kingdom, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, and the family members of these citizens, are permitted to return to their home country or to their place of normal residence in Germany or to reach their country traveling through Germany if they need to.

Germany: Reopening rules vary considerably between Germany’s 16 states, but schools across the country have been gradually returning over the past three to four weeks, operating strict shift patterns.

Researchers assessed the effect face coverings had on regional epidemics in Germany when they were made mandatory in shops and public transport in April.  The move slashed the number of new infections over the next 20 days by almost a quarter, rising to 40 per cent after two months.

Scientists prove efficacy of face masks in preventing virus transmission in Germany
Comparing data from Jena, the first German city to make the wearing of face masks mandatory, with other cities in the country, the paper found that the face mask obligation had helped reduce the total number of registered COVID-19 cases by between 2.3 percent and 13 percent within 10 days after its introduction.

Germany recorded the fewest new coronavirus cases since the end of February and the infection rate fell back below the key threshold of 1.0. … The reproduction factor of the virus, known as R-naught, was at 0.86 on Wednesday, compared with 1.10 the day before, according to a daily report by the Robert Koch Institute.

Coronavirus latest: German schools to reopen, larger events must wait
The federal and state authorities also agreed on additional loosening of coronavirus measures, although various restrictions remain in place. Most notably, schools are expected to resume normal operation after the summer holidays. The exact time of summer break varies from state to state, although students in most parts of Germany go back to school in August… The German government wants schools to return to normal operation after the end of summer holidays, according to the AFP news agency. At the same time, the federal authorities reportedly also want to keep the ban on large public events in force at least until the end of October. Social distancing measures, such as obligatory wearing of masks in shops and on public transport are also expected to stay in force.

COVID-19 in Berlin and Germany: What you need to know 
All children can start returning to day care centers, or “Kita” beginning on June 15 and regular operation will resume starting on June 22.  Schools will reopen in full swing in August, following Berlin’s six-week summer vacation. Students and staff will no longer be required to keep 1.5 meter (5 feet) distance from one another, though hygiene protocols like regular hand-washing and airing out classrooms will be in place. Access to university buildings is largely restricted for the time being. There are some exceptions for essential staff and students who are taking mandatory exams.

The battle is not over: Rising infections seen worldwide 
In Germany, more than 1,550 people have tested positive for coronavirus at the Toennies slaughterhouse in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck and thousands more workers and family members have been put under a quarantine to try to halt the outbreak. On Tuesday, North Rhine-Westphalia state Gov. Armin Laschet said people in Guetersloh and parts of a neighboring county will now face the same restrictions that Germany saw in March and April, including curbs on social gatherings and bar closings. 'The purpose is to calm the situation, to expand testing to establish whether or not the virus has spread beyond the employees of Toennies,' Laschet said.

This was after the country lowered its response to the pandemic, with its stringency score falling from 73 out of 100 at the start of May to 50.
