Teachers in Italy return to work today as schools prepare to begin the new academic year on 14 September, after a nationwide closure of six months due to the covid-19 pandemic.  School teachers will spend the next two weeks planning and preparing for the arrival of students, with catch-up lessons for some pupils beginning today, both face-to-face and online, reports Italian news agency ANSA.

Deciding on a case-by-case basis will take time to replace them. Some estimates foresees that at least 250 thousand alternates should be convened, in a process that will delay the school year.

Italy  Universities will re-open this month in accordance with key guidelines: to the extent possible, lessons will be available in blended mode both in class and online, to cater for students who are unable to return to campus and to reduce the number of attendees in person to half capacity, allowing for social distancing; universities can offer advance booking to attend class in person and schedule participation in shifts; masks are obligatory in class and sanitiser dispensers must be available; the movement of students must be managed to avoid unnecessary gatherings; people with symptoms are not permitted to attend campus.

Some Italian universities have offered incentives in a bid to attract local students, given the anticipated reduction in enrolments due to the effect of the pandemic on family income and lower international student numbers. Measures on offer include merit-based discounts based on academic performance, a bonus for multiple enrolments from the same family, transport discounts, SIM cards with high data capacity and vouchers for reductions on the purchase of laptops and tablets.

Covid-19: Italy reopens universities after six months 
Italy's universities are to reopen for lessons on Monday 21 September, after a closure of more than six months due to the coronavirus emergency, announced Italian higher education minister Gaetano Manfredi.  Universities will adhere to strict new rules, aimed at containing the spread of covid-19, with the obligatory wearing of masks for students, including during lessons, reports Italian news agency ANSA. 

ROME - Universities to reopen under mixed learning system 
The majority of universities in Italy will reopen, confirmed University and Research Minister Gaetano Manfredi. Half the lessons will be held in-person, while the other will be held remotely. 

“First-year students will be favoured when it comes to in-person teaching because they need stronger guidance,” said the minister.  “Face masks will be mandatory during lessons, as the number of students is still high”, said Manfredi. “There hasn’t been a significant decrease in the number of enrolled students,” he added, noting that “this gives hope for the future.”
