Federal Statutory Law

The U.S. Constitution (Art. 1, sec. 8, cl. 8) grants Congress the power "to promote the progress of science and the useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries."

Title 35 of the United States Code (USC) is dedicated to patent law.

Federal Regulations

Federal regulations govern how agencies like the USPTO must carry out the laws as they are set forth in statute. Finalized regulations are published in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).  Patent, trademark, and copyright regulations appear in Title 37 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
